Birth
Giving birth is a unique and intense experience. While it’s not always possible to plan exactly how your birth will unfold, it helps to know your options and what to expect. At Verloskundigenpraktijk Hygiea, we guide you in a way that suits you: personal, professional, and with attention to your wishes. Together, we discuss your preferences and create a birth plan that can adapt to your situation.
Below, you’ll find more information about the different ways to give birth:
Water Birth
A water birth takes place in a specially designed birthing pool filled with warm water. The warm water helps you relax, ease contractions, and encourages a natural birth process. Many women report experiencing less pain and a more positive experience. Water births can take place at home or in certain hospitals, depending on your preferences and medical circumstances.
Birthing Stool
With a birthing stool, you sit upright in a natural position during labour. This posture uses gravity to help the baby descend and gives more space to the pelvis. Many women find this an active and comfortable way to give birth. It can be done at home or in the hospital, with guidance from your midwife.
Home Birth
If your pregnancy is uncomplicated, you can choose to give birth at home – in your own familiar surroundings, supported by your midwife. We ensure everything is safe and well-organized. Home births can offer a calm atmosphere, more freedom, and often a greater sense of control.
Assisted Birth
An assisted birth means your baby is helped to be born using a vacuum pump or forceps. This occurs in the hospital, usually when the pushing stage takes too long or there are concerns about the baby's condition. Your midwife will remain involved where possible, providing support and clear explanations.
Caesarean Section
A caesarean section is a surgical procedure in which the baby is delivered through an incision in the abdomen. Sometimes it’s planned (for medical reasons), but it can also become necessary during labour. It always takes place in a hospital and is performed by a gynecologist. We will support you throughout the process and ensure you receive proper aftercare.
Whichever way your birth unfolds, we are here for you. During your pregnancy check-ups, we discuss your preferences and create a birth plan together. We also recommend joining a birth preparation course, such as Mom & Co or Bevalwijzer, to help you feel confident and informed.
