Meet our team

Flore Selen

Since September 2010, I have been working as a midwife after completing my training in Amsterdam. Following graduation, I gained experience in various practices in and around the city. In 2012, I co-founded our practice, Hygiea, together with Irena Borcuch. I still enjoy working here every day, alongside a wonderful team of colleagues.

I live in Aalsmeer with my partner Luc, and together we have two children: our daughter Lynn (born in 2021) and our son Senn (born in 2023).

Midwifery is a truly special profession to me. Supporting expectant mothers and their unborn babies during such a meaningful time feels like a true privilege. Being present at one of the most beautiful moments in a new family’s life—and being able to offer guidance and reassurance—makes my work incredibly fulfilling.

I value open communication, a positive approach, and creating a calm, welcoming atmosphere.

Irena Borcuch

My name is Irena Borcuch, and I graduated as a midwife in 1993 in Gdańsk, Poland. Between 1999 and 2004, I completed my master’s degree in medical sciences and worked for 11 years as a clinical midwife in tertiary care.

Since 2005, I have been living and working in the Netherlands. After completing a qualification program at AVAG, I worked in Kortenhoef from 2007 to 2010 and then in Lelystad until 2012. From 2012 to 2014, I was affiliated with the hospital in Lelystad, after which I co-founded our practice, Hygiea, together with Flore. We welcomed our first clients in 2013, and since then, the practice has grown into what it is today.

In addition to my work as a midwife, I’ve pursued further education, including a basic ultrasound course and training in TTSEO. In 2024, I completed the ETSEO program.

On a personal note, I am the mother of Gregory, who sadly passed away at the age of 28. I’m a proud grandmother of Julia and Viktor. I live in Amstelveen with my partner Ignacio.

With my international background—born in Kyiv and raised in Gdańsk—I speak multiple languages: Spanish, Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, English, and Dutch. This diversity helps me to support and connect with clients from a wide range of cultural backgrounds.

Popo Lai

My name is Popo Lai. I was born and raised in Amsterdam and graduated as a midwife in 2018 from the University College in Antwerp. After graduating, I completed a work placement in North Holland to become familiar with the Dutch healthcare system.

After working for a few months as a locum midwife in Amsterdam, I quickly realized I had found the right place for me. I’m deeply inspired by the city’s diversity and the wide range of cultural backgrounds among clients. Since 2021, I’ve been a permanent and enthusiastic part of the Hygiea team.

I recently moved to Oostzaan and am currently training to become a certified ultrasound technician. My love for travel remains strong—especially to countries that connect me to my Chinese roots. These trips bring me inspiration and renewed energy.

With a passion for midwifery and a keen eye for cultural diversity, I’m honored to support expectant parents during this special stage of life.

Loranca van Dijk

My name is Loranca van Dijk. I was born and raised in the Frisian town of Sneek and knew from an early age that I wanted to become a midwife. Since I wasn't immediately admitted to midwifery school in the Netherlands due to a lottery system, I first studied Social Work in Groningen. Later, I moved to Leuven, where I followed my dream and graduated as a midwife in 2018.

During my Master’s in Nursing and Midwifery, I discovered that my heart lay in working in the Netherlands. I began my career as a clinical midwife at the Antonius Hospital in Sneek and later moved to Amsterdam, where I worked at the Amstelland Hospital in Amstelveen.

Outside of my work in the Netherlands, I’m also an adventurer at heart. My partner and I love to travel and often spend winters in the Caribbean. I’ve worked as a midwife on both Bonaire and Sint Maarten for extended periods.

Since 2024, I’ve been certified as a basic ultrasound technician and I’m currently pursuing further training in TTSEO at UMC Utrecht.

With my down-to-earth Frisian roots and passion for the profession, I’m dedicated to guiding expectant parents through this special time in their lives.

Josephine Angoh

My name is Josephine Angoh Appiah. I was born in Accra, Ghana, and moved to the Netherlands with my family at a young age. I’m married and a proud mother of four daughters. My faith plays an important role in my life and gives me strength—both in my work and beyond.

Becoming a mother at a young age made me strong and independent. That experience sparked my passion for maternity care. In 2009, I obtained my nursing degree and went on to specialize as an obstetric nurse in 2011. After 16 years of experience in various hospitals, I decided to pursue a long-held dream and began my midwifery training at Thomas More in Turnhout in 2022.

With my experience, calm presence, and dedication, I guide women through pregnancy and childbirth. My goal is to support them in a personal and professional way, so they can look back on this special time with confidence and a positive feeling.
