Birthing Rooms at Midwifery Practice Hygiea

At our Birth Centre at Midwifery Practice Hygiea, you can give birth in one of our two specially equipped birthing rooms. These private rooms have all the necessary facilities, allowing you and your partner to experience a calm and supported birth with your own midwife and maternity nurse. We remain nearby throughout the process to offer personal guidance. There’s a comfortable chair for your partner, and a doula is also very welcome. Of course, all essential tools and pain relief aids are available to help make your experience as positive and comfortable as possible.

More and more women are choosing to give birth in our birth centre. For some, it's a practical option due to their living situation or accessibility. Our central location adds reassurance—if medical intervention is needed, you’ll be at a nearby hospital, such as Amsterdam UMC (AMC location) or Amstelland Hospital in Amstelveen, within 15 minutes.

Whether or not an ambulance is required, we’ll ensure you are transferred quickly and safely if necessary.

When should you come?

You don’t need to wait until you're 5–6 cm dilated. You're welcome as soon as your contractions are regular and you're around 2 to 3 cm dilated.

If you live outside Amsterdam, it may feel more reassuring to come to our practice earlier in labour. Our birthing rooms provide a calm, welcoming space to spend the early stages of labour.

If you're feeling well and everything progresses smoothly, you can choose to stay and give birth right here, without needing to transfer elsewhere—allowing you to labour in peace and comfort.

After the birth, and as long as you and your baby are doing well, you can return home after a few hours to enjoy the rest of your postpartum period in your own space.

Facilities

Each room has its own private bathroom, complete with shower, toilet, and sink. A birthing pool is also available for a more relaxed experience. The rooms are warm and homely, designed to offer an intimate and soothing atmosphere.

  • Use of the birthing room is free of charge

  • Birthing pool use: €100 (includes a sterile liner and hygiene kit)

  • TENS device rental: €25

  • Each room is equipped with:

    • A birthing stool

    • Shower chair

    • A CUB (comfortable inflatable birthing support)

You only need to bring your maternity kit (kraampakket).
We take care of the rest:

  • Fresh bedding

  • Soft bath towels and muslin cloths

  • Light refreshments and of course… Dutch beschuit with muisjes to celebrate your baby’s arrival!
