Maternity Kit (Kraampakket)

Pregnancy comes with many new experiences and preparations. One of the things we as midwives always recommend arranging in time is a maternity kit. This package contains essential medical and hygienic supplies that are useful during a home birth or when you return home after a hospital birth. Items typically include absorbent mats, maternity pads, gauze, gloves, and more.

A well-stocked maternity kit ensures that both you and your maternity nurse have everything needed for a clean and safe postpartum period.

Insurance Coverage

Many Dutch health insurers fully cover the cost of a maternity kit, especially if you have supplementary insurance. It’s worth checking with your insurance provider to see whether this applies to you.

If not covered, no worries—you can easily purchase a kit yourself through platforms like bol.com, often at a lower price than through the insurer.
Make sure to have it by week 36 of your pregnancy.

Cord Ring or Umbilical Clamp?

Some maternity kits include a cord ring instead of the traditional plastic umbilical clamp. A cord ring is a small, soft silicone ring used to clamp the umbilical cord after birth. Many parents find it more comfortable for their baby, as it’s less bulky and softer on the skin.

Not sure which you prefer? You can also buy a cord ring separately. We’re happy to advise you.

About the Cordring

Cord rings are becoming increasingly popular and are safe and hygienic.
If your maternity kit doesn’t include one, but you’d like to use it, you can easily order one online. Make sure to choose a sterile, single-use product.
