At Hygiea, we enjoy working closely with independent maternity nurses (kraamverzorgsters). This allows us to provide continuous and personalized care, ensuring that you and your baby receive the best possible start after birth.

Postnatal Care at Home

After giving birth, you are typically entitled to 8 to 10 days of maternity care. The number of hours you receive varies—between a minimum of 24 hours and a maximum of 80 hours—depending on factors such as:

• Whether you or your baby had a hospital stay

• Whether you choose breastfeeding or bottle-feeding

• If there are any complications with you or your baby

Coverage & Personal Contribution

Maternity care is covered by the basic health insurance package, which is mandatory and the same for everyone in the Netherlands.

• For home maternity care, a personal contribution of €5.40 per hour applies (2025 rate)

• For maternity care provided in a hospital, no personal contribution is required

Birth Assistance (Partusassistentie)

If you give birth at home, at our practice, or in a hospital outpatient setting (poliklinisch), a maternity nurse can assist during the delivery. This is known as partus assistance, and no additional fees apply.

Arrange Maternity Care on Time

Due to the current shortage of maternity nurses in the Netherlands, it is important to arrange your kraamzorg as soon as possible after your intake appointment.
