Post-Term Pregnancy
The 41+ Weeks Check-Up
In first pregnancies (primigravida), labor often starts later than the due date. Around 50% of first-time mothers are still pregnant at 40 weeks, about 25–30% at 41 weeks, and only 5–10% by 42 weeks. On average, first-time mothers give birth around 40 weeks + 5 days, while those who’ve given birth before average around 40 weeks + 3 days. This is because the uterus and cervix often take a bit longer to prepare during a first pregnancy.
➡️ Only 4% of all pregnancies result in delivery on the exact due date.
What Happens After 41 Weeks?
Starting from 41+0 weeks, we schedule an additional check-up. During this visit, we:
Listen to your baby’s heartbeat
Assess the amniotic fluid level and fetal movements
Measure your blood pressure and overall well-being
Discuss the option of membrane sweeping (if desired)
Explain the next steps in case labor hasn't started yet
What Is Membrane Sweeping?
Membrane sweeping is a method used to help stimulate labor. During a vaginal exam, the midwife gently separates the membranes from the cervix using their fingers. This encourages the release of prostaglandins, hormones that may trigger contractions. Sweeping is only effective if your body is ready for labor. If your cervix is not yet "ripe," the procedure is usually ineffective.
Trust Your Body
Trust in your body and the natural process is especially important during this stage of pregnancy.
Pay Close Attention to Baby's Movements
If you notice reduced or absent movements, contact us immediately via the emergency number.
Please don’t wait—we would rather check one time too many than one time too few.
You know your baby best.
Hospital Collaboration
We work closely with both Amsterdam UMC (AMC location) and Amstelland Hospital.
If you choose or need to be induced after 41 weeks, or if extra medical monitoring is required (e.g. due to a post-term pregnancy), we will refer you to one of these hospitals.
A medical induction is typically planned between 41+3 and 42+0 weeks.
After 42+0 weeks, induction is usually recommended due to increased risks, such as placental aging, which can affect the baby’s health.
