Gestational Diabetes
In collaboration with dietitian Dascha Willemsen – Support for Gestational Diabetes
At Midwifery Practice Hygiea, we place great importance on the health and well-being of both mother and baby—during and after pregnancy. That’s why we collaborate with dietitian and nutrition psychologist Dascha Willemsen of DDietist (The Holistic Dietician). She offers specialized support for gestational diabetes (GDM) and helps women manage their blood sugar levels naturally and effectively.
Personalized and Holistic Support
If you are diagnosed with (early-stage) gestational diabetes and referred by us to DDietist, you will receive tailored, expert guidance focused on:
Nutrition & Blood Sugar Regulation – Personalized dietary advice based on your preferences, cultural or religious needs, and lifestyle
Macronutrients & Hormonal Balance – Understanding how to stabilize blood sugar through balanced meals
Lifestyle & Well-Being – Advice on how sleep, stress, and movement affect your hormonal balance and glucose levels
Practical Support – Guidance on how to monitor blood glucose, log your readings, and where to purchase a glucose meter
All care is tailored to your individual situation and needs.
Costs and Reimbursement
DDietist offers two options for GDM support:
Full Program: €294
Short Program: €194
Many Dutch health insurers reimburse up to 70% of the cost, depending on your policy. With a restitution policy, reimbursement may be higher. Note: you pay upfront and submit the invoice to your insurer yourself.
DDietist works without insurance contracts, which allows for more privacy, transparency, and room for holistic care.
How to Book an Appointment
If you’ve been referred by us, you can make an appointment with Dascha Willemsen via her website or by sending a WhatsApp message.
Have questions about the program or your insurance coverage? Feel free to contact us—we’re happy to help.

Referral to Hospital Care for Gestational Diabetes
In some cases, a referral to the hospital (secondary care) is necessary. This happens if your oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) shows significantly elevated levels, indicating a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
In these cases:
Your pregnancy care will continue at the hospital, not with your midwife
The care is fully covered by your health insurance
You will be under the care of a gynecologist, and possibly an internist or endocrinologist
Additional tests or medication may be required to manage your blood sugar
We follow national and regional medical guidelines set by Kennisnet Geboortezorg for all referrals.
Partnership with Amstelland Hospital
We work closely with Amstelland Hospital, where a team of specialists has extensive experience with gestational diabetes and its impact on both mother and baby.
If referral is necessary:
We handle all communication and ensure your medical records are transferred promptly
You will be seen by a specialized hospital team for further care
What This Means for You
If your GDM is mild to moderate, support through DDietist and our practice is often enough to manage your glucose levels
If your blood sugar is severely elevated, we will refer you to Amstelland Hospital for continued care
Unsure about your values or blood sugar readings? Talk to your midwife—we’re here to help you interpret and act on them
Important
Care for gestational diabetes within our practice is provided exclusively through our partner dietitian, Dascha Willemsen (DDietist).
Treatment through another dietitian or on your own initiative—without coordination with our team—is not possible.
🔹 This ensures that all care is properly aligned and risks for both mother and baby are minimized.
🔹 If a client chooses not to work with our partner dietitian, we will be required to transfer the full care to the hospital.
